How to Maintain an Aluminium Shower Screen in Singapore

A custom-sized aluminium shower screen or frameless shower screen transforms an HDB bathroom — until Singapore's hard water turns the glass cloudy and the tracks pick up hair. Here's the realistic maintenance plan: a 15-second daily habit, a 10-minute weekly clean, and a six-monthly check.

Daily: the 15-second squeegee rule

The single biggest factor in keeping a shower screen clear is wiping the water off before it dries.

Keep a small rubber squeegee on a hook inside the shower. After every shower, swipe the water off the glass panels — top to bottom, three or four strokes. That's it.

Hard water stains form when droplets evaporate and leave calcium behind. No droplets, no stains. This one habit removes 80% of the work that would otherwise be needed weekly.

Weekly: soap scum and water mineral buildup

If the glass already looks cloudy, don't reach for harsh abrasives. Steel wool and strong acidic cleaners can scratch tempered glass permanently and pit the aluminium finish.

The natural solution that works:

  1. Mix 50% white vinegar and 50% warm water in a spray bottle.
  2. Add a few drops of dishwashing liquid.
  3. Spray generously over the glass; let it sit 10–15 minutes.
  4. Wipe with a soft microfibre cloth and rinse with warm water.

Do this once a week if you don't squeegee daily, once a month if you do.

Six-monthly: tracks and rollers

Aluminium shower screens are rust-free by design, but the sliding tracks and rollers still need attention:

  • Vacuum the tracks. Once a month, use the narrow nozzle on your vacuum to clear hair and dust from the bottom tracks. (Frameless screens with no bottom track skip this step — one of the reasons we recommend them, similar to the trackless argument in our Slide & Swing vs Bi-Fold doors comparison.)
  • Lubricate the rollers. Every six months, spray a tiny amount of silicone-based lubricant onto the top rollers. Avoid WD-40 and other sticky oils — they attract dust and cause the same jams you're trying to prevent.

What about the seals?

The rubber seals (gaskets) along the edges last 5–10 years. If you notice water pooling outside the screen footprint, the seal at the floor is the most likely culprit. Replacement is cheap and a 10-minute job for an installer.

Frequently asked questions

My glass is permanently cloudy. Can it be saved? Sometimes. Light calcium buildup comes off with the vinegar method. Deep etching from years of neglect doesn't — the glass itself is damaged. Replacement is the only fix.

Can I use commercial bathroom cleaners? PH-neutral cleaners marked safe for tempered glass are fine. Avoid anything with bleach, ammonia, or strong acids on the aluminium frame.

How do I clean fluted or frosted glass? Same method, but use a soft brush instead of a microfibre cloth to get into the texture. Rinse thoroughly to avoid streaking.

Looking for low-maintenance?

A frameless shower screen has fewer parts to maintain — no bottom track, no aluminium frame to wipe down, just two big easy-to-clean glass panels. If you're rebuilding the bathroom anyway, it's worth the upgrade.
